Friction Tester

The KES-SE Friction Tester analyzes hand movements—particularly, strokes—performed by artisans and professionals when judging a fabric’s texture. The device performs this movement mechanically, making it possible to obtain objective numerical data while offering more enhanced versatility over the KES-FB4-A Surface Tester.

Obtainable data includes average frictional coefficient, and fluctuation of average frictional coefficient. From these characteristic values, the KES-SE evaluates and quantifies smoothness, slipperiness, and roughness felt when actually touching the target in order to provide objective data.

Roughness / Friction Tester
  • In addition to average frictional coefficient and fluctuation of average frictional coefficient, surface roughness data is obtained. The device is also suitable for light texture conditions and hair measurement.

Reading the data

MIU
  • The average value of μ in a distance of 20 mm is known as MIU (mean frictional coefficient).
    μ (“miu”)= Friction coefficient
    Unit: Dimensionless
MMD
  • MMD (fluctuation of mean frictional coefficient) is the degree of variation that determines how much of a change from MIU (mean frictional coefficient) is present.

    Unit: Dimensionless
SMD
  • SMD (surface roughness) is the average deviation of the uneven surface data.

How this relates to the feeling of friction (slipperiness) when touched by hand

MIU correlates to the slipperiness of touching the surface of an actual object by hand.
Higher MIU values mean less slippery feeling.
MMD correlates to the smoothness and roughness of touching the surface of an actual object by hand.
Higher MMD values mean the surface of the target is rough.

    Connecting this device to the instrument and to a PC allows the waveforms and numerical values of measurement data to be output.
    Obtained data can be saved as BIN data or CSV data.

KES (Kawabata Evaluation) SYSTEM

The Kawabata Evaluation System, centered on Sueo Kawabata, a professor at Kyoto University, and Masako Niwa, a professor at Nara Women’s University, is an objective evaluation method for measuring the texture of clothing fabrics based on the “The Standardization and Analysis of Hand Evaluation” provided by the Hand Evaluation and Standardization Committee of the Textile Machinery Society of Japan.
